When are Birth Injuries Caused By Medical Malpractice?

Birth Injury Statistics
The newest statistics published by The National Center for Biotechnology Information showed that birth trauma increased by 23% – from 25.3 to 31.1 traumas per 1,000 births in hospitals in a Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2006 through 2014.
Of those, 80 percent of birth traumas were scalp injuries. However, other injuries, including brachial plexus injuries, clavicular fractures, and intracranial hemorrhage, decreased from 5.44 to 4.67 injuries per 1,000 births using the same data sample from the same period.
A similar study from 2004 to 2012 found that birth trauma rates fell from 2.6 per 1,000 live births to 1.9 per 1,000 live births. That study found that the use of instruments, such as forceps and vacuums, also decreased.
Types of Birth Injuries
